The solar roof was first unveiled by Elon Musk in 2016, with a predicted installation pace of 1,000 units per week. However, the product failed to gain traction, with only 3,000 units installed in the US by the end of 2022.
The solar roof's demise comes as Tesla is exploring new solar ambitions, including a proposed $10.1 billion solar cell factory in Texas. The company has also indicated interest in manufacturing 100 gigawatts of integrated solar panels, a goal that is far more ambitious than its current production capacity.
Tesla's Solar Roof Failures
Tesla's solar roof was a specialty product that was designed to disrupt the traditional two-step process of installing roofs and then adding solar panels. However, the product failed to gain traction in the market, with several issues contributing to its downfall.
The solar roof was far more expensive than conventional solar panels, taking longer to install and in some cases warping or underproducing its nameplate capacity. The product also failed to crack 0.03% of the roofing market in 2022, and accounted for only 0.17% of the residential solar capacity installed that year.
Tesla's New Solar Focus
In contrast to its failed solar roof product, Tesla's new focus on conventional solar panels is a more modest and practical approach. The company has brought online 300 MW of manufacturing capacity for a new rooftop solar panel, which will be made at the beleaguered Buffalo, New York, factory where it once produced the solar roof.
Tesla's new solar panel is essentially a normal solar panel, with a sleek all-black design and streamlined installation elements. However, it is not a revolutionary product, and its production capacity is smaller than the multi-gigawatt factories opened by other companies in the US with help from incentives in the Inflation Reduction Act.

Tesla's Texas Solar Factory Proposal
Tesla has also submitted documents to Texas regulators for a possible $10.1 billion solar cell factory near Houston, with construction beginning as soon as this year and wrapping up by the start of 2029. The factory would create nearly 10,000 full-time jobs and would be an enormous investment in the domestic solar supply chain.
The proposed factory would be an undertaking for a company that has lately shifted its strategic focus to robotic butlers. However, it would also be a significant step for Tesla in the solar market, and would suggest a lesson drawn from the solar roof's downfall: don't be too fancy, stick with the form factor that has become the biggest new power source worldwide, and drive efficiency through economies of scale.
