A new study challenges the notion that keeping an old gas car running is better for the environment than switching to an electric vehicle (EV). Research led by environmental scientist Elliot Campbell at the University of California, Santa Cruz, found that replacing even a two-year-old gas car with an EV can cut lifetime emissions by roughly 50 percent. The findings, published in *Science*, suggest that the sooner drivers make the switch, the greater the climate benefits. ## EVs Outperform Gas Cars in Emissions Savings Campbell’s study deliberately favored gas vehicles by ignoring the emissions from their production, treating them as a sunk cost. Yet, EVs still emerged as the cleaner option. The research shows that the emissions saved by driving an EV quickly compensate for those generated during its manufacturing. This holds true even for high-efficiency hybrids like the Toyota Prius, though plug-in hybrids and low-mileage vehicles were exceptions. David Reichmuth, a transportation sustainability expert at the Union of Concerned Scientists, confirmed that EVs reach an emissions break-even point at around 18,000 miles-about 18 months of average driving. However, the benefits vary by location. In regions with cleaner electricity grids, such as upstate New York, an EV’s efficiency rivals that of a gas car getting 219 miles per gallon. Even in areas reliant on coal and natural gas, EVs outperform most gas vehicles. ## Policy and Practical Considerations The study suggests that policies encouraging the early retirement of gas cars-such as financial incentives-could accelerate emissions reductions. Reichmuth argues that preventing gas car sales altogether is another effective strategy, provided EVs are made more accessible. Meanwhile, Campbell highlights the need for further research into the full lifecycle emissions of gas cars, including extraction and fuel distribution. While the study does not address the upfront cost of EVs, Campbell hopes economists will explore this aspect. He also notes that as the U.S. shifts to renewable energy and improves battery recycling, the environmental advantages of EVs will only grow. For now, the message is clear: switching to an EV sooner rather than later is a climate win.
