Arevon Energy has announced that its largest standalone battery energy storage project, the 300-MW Nighthawk Energy Storage Project, is now operational in Poway, California. The project was launched on August 13 and will store electricity during periods of lower demand, dispatching it when demand for electricity is highest.

Project Details

The Nighthawk Energy Storage Project uses lithium iron phosphate battery technology, recognized for its strong safety record and long operating life. Arevon owns the project, which it developed, built, and will operate, and has a long-term agreement with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E). The facility supports power grid reliability in the area around San Diego.

According to Arevon, the project is expected to generate more than $30 million in property tax revenue over its lifetime, helping to fund local schools, public safety, infrastructure improvements, and other essential community services. During peak construction, the project employed more than 130 workers.

Economic Benefits

Arevon CEO Justin Johnson stated that energy storage is becoming increasingly important as electricity demand continues to rise across California and the United States. He emphasized that projects like Nighthawk are critical to America's growing energy needs, strengthening grid reliability while delivering lasting economic benefits for local communities.

The project has received support from local officials, including San Diego County District 2 supervisor Joel Anderson, who noted that the project strengthens infrastructure, boosts the local economy, supports grid reliability, and provides enough capacity to power up to 385,000 homes when needed most.

Community Partnerships

Arevon has partnered with organizations throughout Poway and the greater San Diego community, supporting youth programs, first responders, special needs adult services, climate education, and local nonprofit organizations. Key partnerships include the North County Special Needs Community Foundation, Kiwanis Club of Poway and The Ranches, and the Deputy Sheriffs' Association of San Diego County.

Tony Rubino, president at North County Special Needs Community Foundation, praised Arevon's commitment to engaging with and supporting the local community, noting that the company has been very supportive of several local special needs events. The company's investment in Poway reflects its commitment to partnership between infrastructure, business, and community, according to Chris Cate, president and CEO for the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Arevon's Nighthawk Energy Storage Project is one of several recent milestones in California, where the company has more than 4 GW in operation, representing billions of dollars in capital investment. The company is currently building 370 MW of new capacity and has partnered with local utilities to develop and build 480 MW of solar energy. As reported by Darrell Proctor, senior editor for POWER, Arevon is one of California's leading renewable energy developers, owners, and operators.
